Men, Women and Sports
I was chatting with my friend this morning about sports. Not in the way that guys talk about sports, if you read my baseball posts, you will see that we don’t talk statistics and all that. We were discussing the role of sports in relationships.
I’ve heard so many guys say that they really want a girl who would watch the game with them. My question is, why? Why do you need us to watch a game with you? Don’t you have friends of your own that you can go to the game with? (Note, I do love going to baseball games.) I can see how it would be nice to have similar interests, and doing things together is always a good thing, but you don’t see us saying “I wish I could find a guy who would go shoe shopping with me.”
I love men who sports. Knowing what his schedule is going to be at the beginning of the season makes it so much easier for me to plan my life. You have your sports, we have our brunches, shopping, going for coffee…
This all reminds me of my old friend Dawn. She’s quite the character, and so is her lovely family. She was telling me the story of how her mom seduced her dad in the early stages of their relationship. Apparently, they bonded over a similar love of hockey. The Mom would accompany The Dad to hockey games, wore jerseys, cheered, etc. About a week or so after they were wed, The Dad said “Honey, the game is about to start, are you going to come and watch?” to which The Mom replied “No, I hate hoceky. I pretended to like it so that you would marry me.” (They are still together, 35 years later).
So, yeah, I’ll watch baseball, but if the hockey game is on, I have my own things to do…and have a lose beleif that women who claim to be into sports, do so simply to impress men.

Serious post here.
I do not want a girl who is interested in sports. I am a big sports fan and a HUGE NFL football fan and I use sports as an “excape” from real life. I have had girlfriends who tried to share in this passion and it just ends up being annoying. When I am watching a game, the last thing I want to do is explain what the green dot is on the back of the QB’s helmet. When my fav team wins, I am ecstatic but after a big loss, it sometimes takes me 2 days to rebound. QUIT TRYING TO CHEER ME UP. Like I said before Sports is an excape from me. If we have a big fight, I want to go to a sports bar drink beer, eat a greasy burger and watch the game. How is that an excape if she is already there watching the damn game?
That being said, I love girls in slutty sports jerseys. (http://dailyfapper.com/galleries/april2006/Diddy_Licious_Sports_Jersey_Panties/diddy_licious_sports_jersey.jpg)

There’s a green dot on the back of the QB’s helmet?
April 8th, 2009 at 11:27 am
The green dot, Darcie!! Hmm, it must symbolize a player’s marital status, kind of like the bindi (red dot) does for Indian women. That’s cool, they do that too.

Teen Wolf is the man I agree 100% especially about the girls in jerseys thank you so much for the Link.

I’m tempted to explain the green dot, but I realize that that would only lead to more questions…
If a girl likes to play sports, that’s awesome, as I play a lot of sports (some friends say I play too many), and if she likes to be active too, great! If we can find an activity that we both like, even better. But I wouldn’t expect a girl to take up playing floor hockey or ultimate just because I play it…
When it comes to following sports, it would probably depend on her level of knowledge of the sport. If she has a working knowledge of the game and knows the difference between a snapshot and a slapshot, a wide receiver and a tight end, or OBP and slugging percentage, by all means, sit down with me and watch the game. But I don’t want to spend the entire time sitting there explaining what the trapezoid behind the net is for…
If she can sit there and eventually pick up on some stuff herself without pestering me with a million questions, or if she takes it upon herself to actually learn the game on her own time and enjoys it, that’s great too…
But I don’t want a girl that only gets into sports because I’m into sports…

For Darcie and drummerg217:
I am working on getting my gravatar pic up and running, but have to do it at home, not from a work computer–you know, absolutely no fun allowed at work!
And about today’s post–guys just want their girls to like to be with them doing the things they enjoy. I know it won’t always happen, but when it does–if you were a guy, wouldn’t you rather have a woman doing those things together with you, sharing those “moments”, than another guy?
April 8th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
I can hardly wait to sit next to you, Randy, at the football game we all have tix to. Looking forward to having you explain to me EVERYTHING about the game!! Will try and bring a pen and paper so I can take notes. I promise you I won’t ask a million questions….we won’t have THAT much time (unfortunately) to go through everything.
April 8th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
@Randy, you pretty much explained to me all I know about baseball, so it can’t be that much of a bother.
@Frank, ok, but if we have to watch football, you have to buy us shoes.
@Twyla, wont we be drinking?
April 8th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
And Teenwolf, can you stop putting up pics of hot women on my site?
April 8th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
If I like something, I like it…that said I love hockey and really get into yelling with the fans. I have yet to find someone to make a short road trip with me to go see a game. And I saw the OU/OState game a couple years ago, the atmosphere was awesome and it was a great game. I like some sports because I’m interested in them, not to make a guy like me. To have fun and enjoy them, much like live concerts.
And I agree, I think we all need to have our time to ourselves or to go out with our separate friends. There’s nothing wrong with that!
Now on to writing a report…anyone want to do that? Just to make me happy!?!!? ;) j/k…I’ll get it done.
April 8th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
And wait, that was not an invitation to ask if I want to go see a hockey game with anyone!!!
April 8th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Hmmm, this where I backpedal a little…
I’ve taken girls to baseball games before, and it wasn’t a big deal, as the game moves slow enough that there is time between pitches to explain the basics, and really, there isn’t too much that can’t be explained rather simply. Not to mention that the girls already had at least a passing interest in the game…
When something does happen in a baseball game, there is only one focal point, unlike in a football or hockey game, where players are going in all different directions in anticipation of the play. So you don’t have to explain why this one guy keeps doing this one thing, while the other guys are doing something else…
Baseball is the exception, where I don’t watch it on TV, unless I’m doing something and just have it on in the background. But there is so much going on in football and hockey, that if you have to take a couple of minutes to explain something, you’ll miss something else…
Twyla, you can sit next to my brother and he will explain everything that you need to know (especially about how your beloved Alouettes will fall short of the Grey Cup again this year)… Oh, and its two games, and yes, we will be drinking at both…
April 8th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
@drummerg217 come to Toronto. Randy will take you to a baseball game.

April 8th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
Howdie Darcy
while share you hatred of hockey
i must safe that football is my life
dont try to come between me and a packers game
it will only result in death
and to you teen wolf i say
youre clearly dating idiot posers
cuz we femme sports fan will give you a run for your money when it comes to get riled up and throwing shit at the television screen when the ref makes a bad call
our team screws up or the dreaded other bests us
may i just say that back in 2008 when the packers lost thier shot at the superbowl to the new york giants because of the wanker known as “Eli Manning”
i damn near died
and i had a grieving period of week and almost boycotted the superbowl all together
so while i totally agree that theres a high population of moronic women making us sport fiends look bad
when you come across the real deal
i think your relationship would bloom
because everybody knows that girls look hot as hell in their team jerseys
and even hotter
when theyre mad as hell when their team loses and are looking for a lil summin summin to get em through the night and make the pain go away
April 8th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
lol I think if I went to Canada, I’d rather go to a hockey game and leave baseball for the states. “football” in Europe! ;) NFL here……………………
April 8th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Considering that I like sports more than my boyfriend, where does that leave me? I never really liked them until I went to games myself. Only way I enjoy hockey is when I am at the game.
However, after learning to coach basketball the past few years, I have discovered that I really like the game and don’t mind watching the games on t.v. if there is nothing else on. It gives me a chance to get some new ideas, but it doesn’t beat a real life game.
April 9th, 2009 at 8:58 am
@teenwolf, that last pic was hot. I think the world would be a better place if everyone looked like her.
@desire, I love football players.
@Janice, my mom watches sports and my dad doesn’t. So I guess I will still let you be my friend.
April 9th, 2009 at 9:01 am
And Drummerg217, Randy will take you to any game you want to see.
April 15th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Well my boyfriend definately loves the fact that Im a diehard football fan. I know the game very well. I watch it all.. college & NFL, but mostly love the NFL. Everyone at my job today was laughing at me because I am counting down the days to the NFL Draft next week! I’ve been a huge fan for years and if you walk into my bedroom you won’t find pictures of flowers or girly things on my walls…instead I have a collection of Athletes autographs and posters of my favorite NFL players like Asante Samuel & Ladainian Tomlinson on my walls. I have more jerseys than any girl is supposed to have, and I watch SportsCenter on a daily basis lol. My bf is a huge fan also and he thinks its the sexiest thing. He doesnt know how he got so lucky with me, is what he says all the time. I guess everyones different. I do understand when guys say sports is an “escape” for them though.
